Schilling hopes to help make MSU 'stronger than ever'
Prior to calling the Michigan State basketball offices on Wednesday afternoon, Gavin Schilling filled out his NCAA Tournament brackets and projected a run to the Final Four for the Spartans.
The 6-foot-8, 240-pound Schilling, a fast-rising 3-star power forward from Findlay Prep near Las Vegas, then informed MSU assistant coach Dane Fife the Spartans had won the race to land his signature on a national letter of intent this spring.
Schilling picked MSU from a field of finalists that also included UCLA, Minnesota and Villanova - posting his decision on Twitter at 3:35 p.m. Wednesday with the following tweet:
"Gavin Schilling @GSchills32 9m I proudly announce that I will be playing my college basketball at Michigan State University! Much love to all who supported me! #GoGreen"
SpartanMag.com caught up with both Schilling and Findlay Prep head coach Todd Simon not long afterward and both foresee a bright future for both the player and his collegiate team of choice. Schilling - who's mom, Lisa, and younger brother, Nigel, live in Chicago - just turned 17 in November.
