UW atop Miller's list
It takes a special prospect to lure Bret Bielema into the state of Colorado.
Wisconsin's head coach, not known for recruiting the Centennial State, has officially entered unfamiliar territory in hopes of landing one of the most promising quarterback talents in the nation.
The junior he's after: Jonny Miller of Denver (Colo.) Mullen.
Tuesday night, BadgerBitz.com caught up with the 6-foot-2, 205-pound prospect to discuss his recent unofficial visit to Wisconsin.
"It was a ten
definitely," Miller said. "Wisconsin was great. I loved it. Madison is a great town. I was able to spend some time with Coach Bielema and Coach (Paul) Chryst. They are great guys.
"I was also able to watch a scrimmage which was really cool. I love the stadium. It holds about 86,000 people. That was eye opening. I had a great time on my visit."
Admittedly impressed with the campus and facilities, Miller was elated by the hospitality he received from the Badger coaching staff.
"Oh, man, I loved them (the coaches). I loved everything about them," he said. "I thought they were straight forward and I actually sat down and watched some film with Coach Chryst. It was cool to see how he interacts with his players on a daily basis.
"I really enjoyed that experience. It wasn't something I expected to do, but it's definitely something I'm glad I did. It was great to see that and I really liked all of the coaches that I met."
Miller, who is listed as a dual-threat quarterback, was able take in the sights and sounds of practice last Saturday morning. While studying the offense and evaluating the players, Miller feels he'd fit well in Chryst's offensive scheme.
"I told my parents that the staff likes my abilities and that I'd fit well into their offense," he explained. "After watching the offense I really think it will fit my abilities. Obviously they didn't have the full offense in because its spring ball, but they had the quarterbacks in shot-gun as well as under center. I feel like it's great for my abilities."
While it's early in the recruiting process for juniors, Miller can say confidently that the Badgers currently are his favorite school.
However, one can expect his recruitment to pick up heading into the spring and summer.
"I have a lot of schools coming to watch me throw," Miller said. "Georgia, Wake Forest, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado State and Oklahoma are some of the schools coming in during the next few weeks.
"There are really no plans for me to visit anywhere else right now. All I can say is that Wisconsin is my favorite school and I can definitely see myself becoming a Badger some day. I've got to hold that commitment off for a little bit to make sure everything is right. I want to take my time and make sure everything fits great before I make my commitment."
Miller, who's older brother Jimmy plays for San Diego State, expects to make a decision in late June or early July. He currently has offers from Wisconsin and New Mexico State.
