September 17, 2013If the first couple of weeks were deemed as measuring sticks for the Atlantic Coast Conference, the third week of play didn't really determine much.
Game: Syracuse 54, Wagner 0. The Orange rolled to a 37-0 halftime lead in giving coach Scott Shafer his first victory. Syracuse overwhelmed an overmatched FCS foe as QB Terrel Hunt guided the Orange to five first-half touchdown drives in a relief role.
Takeaway: The Orange has a victory under its belt and it's a much-needed dose of confidence for a team that stumbled out of the gate. But something else has developed through three games and this will have to play out in the coming weeks.
The Orange has some quarterback questions after what Hunt demonstrated against Wagner. The Orange stalled with Drew Allen at the wheel in the early going against Wagner before Hunt jump-started the offense.
So it figures that Hunt has earned himself playing time regardless of whether he's in a starting role. To Allen's credit, he went against Penn State and Northwestern in the first two weeks and that's a substantially large assignment than what Hunt encountered when he entered the game against Wagner.
Still, you can't discount Hunt's 15-for-18 passing and the fact that the Orange moved the ball at will.
The Orange probably can look past the potential questions about the quarterback and simply take satisfaction in that it knows what it feels like to experience all-out success.
Next: vs. Tulane, Sept. 21.
