Meet James Demery
Greenville (NC) Oakwood shooting guard James Demery is becoming a priority on many schools' 2014 recruiting boards.
The 6-foot-4, 187-pound jumping jack guard claims scholarship offers from East Carolina, Kansas State, Maryland, Memphis, NC State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Clemson, Kansas, Virginia Commonwealth and Wake Forest are also showing interest in Demery.
He plans to attend Wake's Elite Camp Saturday, June 2. Demery has visited East Carolina, but has been unable to check out other schools. Clemson, NC State, UVA, Va. Tech and VCU have visited Demery at his school.
Demery said no one stands out above the rest, but he does like NC State. He will likely wait till near the end of his senior season to choose a school.
He wants to attend a college with a strong academic reputation and has a basketball team with good camaraderie that helps younger players develop.
He said attacking the rim and his pull-up jump-shot are his main strengths offensively, but he also takes pride in his defense.
"I love playing defense," Demery said. "To me I feel like that's the best part of my game, being able to stop guys. I'm like the tallest person on our [AAU] team. I still guard point guards and shooting guards, but for [the] tournaments we're going to I have to be down low on defense. I have to guard someone [who is] 6-9, 6-8."
Demery averaged 19 points, five rebounds, 2.3 steals, two assists and a block per game to help lead Oakwood to a 21-6 record.
