Ellis talks about his decision

After talking things over with Iowa assistant coach Bobby Kennedy this morning, Texas kicker Mick Ellis made a second call to the Hawkeye coaching staff, this time to give his verbal commitment to special teams coach Chris White. We caught up with Ellis to talk about his college decision today, the expectations the coaches have of him coming in next year, and much more.

Q: First of call, can you tell us about making the call to Iowa? When did you actually do it and who did you speak with?

ELLIS: I actually did it this afternoon, around 1:00 o'clock I guess is when I called Coach White. I had just gotten off the phone with Coach Kennedy talking about what the official offer was and what happens if you get injured or something like that. We were just going over some of the details because those were like my final questions. After I got off the phone with him, I talked to my parents and within an hour I called Coach White and committed.

Q: What did he say when you gave him the news?

ELLIS: He actually said, "Well, you made me a better coach today."

As a junior at Lovejoy High School in Lucas, TX, Ellis earned first team all-state honors last season after making 13 of 17 field goals with a long of 53 yards.
