NJ kicker looking for a home
Franklin Lakes (NJ) Ramapo kicker Ross Krautman comes from a kicking family. His older brother Ricky played football at Syracuse. Now it is time for another Krautman to look for a place to kick in college.
Krautman, 5-foot-8, 160 pounds does not hold any offers at this time, but some time spent at a couple summer camps could change that. A couple weekends ago Krautman made the trip from New Jersey to New York so he could work out at Syracuse.
"The Syracuse camp went real well, it was exciting," Krautman said. "I thought I did real good. It was good to compete with the top kickers that they are recruiting."
The Garden State prospect thought he did well and it showed at the camp as he won kicking competition.
"The competition was when you miss one field goal you are out of the competition. It came down to me and one other kid from about 51 yards out," Krautman stated. "We started out with a 35 yard field goal and then we went back to 40, 45, 50, and then me and the kid went to a couple overtimes and then I ended up winning it."
Even though the Orange seem to be high on Krautman they have not talked about an offer, but they did outline a plan for the upcoming months with the prospect.
"Right now they offered that kid in the 2009 class, but they said they are definitely offering a kicker in the 2010 class. The coach said that they were going to be keeping in touch and recruiting me very hard and he said that we will keep in touch over these next few months. The special teams coach said for me to call him whenever and stuff like that."
Syracuse University is a tempting place for any kicker to go because of its indoor and outdoor facilities. It is that aspect and a couple others that have Krautman high on the Orange.
"I really like Syracuse and my older brother went to Syracuse, so I am familiar with the school. It is a very nice campus and their facilities are awesome, with the new weight room. Just like everything about it and the Carrier Dome nothing is better than that, kicking inside the Carrier Dome which is awesome."
It has been awhile since Krautman has been at the school. Last time he was on the campus was when Paul Pasqualoni was coach. A few things have changed since then.
"The facilities definitely changed. They now look really amazing right now and it looks a lot bigger, the weight room and everything. The new coaching staff looks awesome. Coach Marrone seems like a great coach to play under, Coach Casullo seems like a great special teams coach."
One item that really sticks out is being able to play inside for the home games at Syracuse.
"I think that would be really awesome. When anybody talks about indoor stadiums it is always the Carrier Dome," Krautman added. "Kicking inside is awesome."
"It is definitely one of the best places for a kicker. You get indoor practice obviously during half of the season plus you get the outdoor practice which helps get you ready for the Big East because all of those stadiums are outside. Yeah it definitely is best of both worlds for a kicker."
Besides the Orange a few other schools are very interested in Krautman and they are in his top three.
"Syracuse is definitely in my top three schools, I really do like them. Syracuse, Rutgers, and Boston College are all in my top three."
Right now Rutgers and Boston College have also not offered, but one of those teams could offer soon.
"Rutgers is pretty highly interested right now. My head football coach told me that they will probably extend an offer in the next few months of the recruiting process."
As for the rest of the summer there is only one other visit scheduled so far, but that could change.
"Right now I am going to Rutgers in a couple weeks and that is all I know of right now. Things could change possibly Minnesota I am not 100 percent on that. I am definitely going to the Rutgers kicking camp."
Last season Krautman had a field goal long of 38 yards and did not miss an extra point.
