Whigham in waiting

Dwyer (Fla.) High School wide receiver Julian Whigham has been receiving mail from schools around the country but is ready to take his recruitment to the next level.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder is still awaiting his first scholarship offer but hopes it will come after a successful summer on the camp circuit.

Whigham has three camp destinations in mind currently planning trips to Florida State, Notre Dame and Miami.

Plenty of schools have shown him attention but several programs have been constant during his early recruitment.

"As far as recruiting, I've been getting a lot of mail but no one's been calling," Whigham said. "I'm guessing after the spring it will pick up. Hopefully I'm going up to the camp at Notre Dame during the summer. I thought that would be a good trip.

"I've gotten a lot of stuff from Wake Forest. Georgia has recently been sending me a lot of stuff. Illinois is another one sending a lot and USF. A lot of schools earlier were sending a lot of mail then they stopped so those are the schools that are consistent."

Another school that has been off and on during Whigham's recruitment is Mississippi State.

"They were one of the schools sending mail at the beginning of the season," Whigham said. "They stopped around the middle and then sent me some at the end. I get some occasionally but consistently like some of the other schools that have been sending me stuff."

Whigham has been invited to several junior days this spring but has yet to make an appearance.

While most programs covet Whigham as a wide receiver, he was kept off of offense last season due to offseason surgery that limited his junior season to the defensive side of the ball. He still made the most of it intercepting three passes for touchdowns helping lead the Panthers to a 12-2 record and into the fourth round of the Class 4A State Playoffs.

"We were a little bit disappointed that we made it to the semifinals and lost to Armwood," Whigham said. "But as far as my individual season, it was disappointing also because I had a surgery prior to the season on my stomach so the coaches took me off offense because he didn't want me to take a big hit. I played strong safety and free safety a lot and had three picks and took all those back for touchdowns. It was a solid season but not as good as what it could have been."
