Malloy asked to walk on
Michael Malloy is still going to be a Hawkeye this year, it will be as a walk-on. The 6-foot-0, 180-pound Malloy had verbally accepted a scholarship offer from the Iowa coaching staff over the summer, but that was before an arrest in August, which led the Hawkeyes to re-evaluate the situation. If Sioux City Heelan running back
"It's my understanding that he'll have to pay for his first year there," Sioux City Heelan coach Roger Jansen told Marc Morehouse of the Gazette on Thursday. "He could then end up on scholarship depending how he does."
Malloy was initially charged with four offenses in the arrest, including possession of drug paraphernalia, but in the end pleaded guilty to just one, which was obstructing an officer, and was sentenced to probation. He was suspended for the first couple weeks of the season and then tore his ACL in his second game back, so finished the year with just 83 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns.
South Dakota is still showing interest in Malloy, who had knee surgery on October 6, but his coach told the Gazette that he believes the high school senior will probably stick with Iowa and take the walk-on opportunity.
"I think he's planning on Iowa," said Jansen. "He's given me no indication that he's changed his mind."
