Syracuse won its first game against a ranked team in over a year Saturday afternoon, defeating No. 14 Princeton 16-13 on a sun-splashed day in front of an overflow crowd of 2,535 at Class of 1952 Stadium in Princeton, N.J.

Here are three takeaways from the victory that upped SU's record to 7-5 with three games left in the regular season.

Winning faceoffs is a winning formula

Syracuse's Jack Fine was strong at the X right from the get go. Fine won the day's opening draw that resulted in a Saam Olexo unassisted goal just 15 seconds into the contest, to give the Orange a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the day.

Overall, Fine won 22 of 30 faceoffs giving the 'Cuse plenty of scoring opportunities that resulted in 50 shots on goal.

The faceoff advantage also off-set some sloppy play at times, as SU was guilty of 16 turnovers.

"It was a focus of ours to get a road win against a ranked team," head coach Gary Gait said afterwards. "We buckled down when we had to in front of a great crowd, a full crowd, and we're happy to come up with the "W."

Spallina shines as a scorer and a feeder

Frosh phenom Joey Spallina was a marked man by the Princeton defense in his customary position behind the net quarterbacking the Orange offense, and he delivered time and again.

Syracuse's latest No. 22 standout finished with four goals and five assists, the nine points tied for the fourth-most by a SU first year player, while his five assists tied for the third-most by a 'Cuse freshman.

All four of Spallina's goals came in the first half, and he had at least one assist in each quarter to lead a balanced offensive effort in which eight different SU players tallied.

"Today was an example of what we can do as a team offensively," Spallina said following the game amongst an orange and blue celebration on the field. "My teammates were helping me out a ton. They helped me get open and they helped me find them for good shots. That's a good sign for what we have to do the rest of the way."

Will was on the 'Mark' to stymie a Princeton comeback

Princeton never got closer than two goals during the game, trailing 15-13 after three quarters, and Orange goalie Will Mark got stronger as the game progressed.

Mark shut out the Tigers in the fourth quarter making several acrobatic saves on close-in opportunities, finishing with 17 saves in the game.

Princeton kept Mark busy firing 47 shots in his direction overall, 30 on goal, but time again he stood his ground with great eyes and a quick stick.

"Our defense has practiced so hard all season," Mark said with a huge smile on his face following the victory. "That second half was a testament to all of that hard work and I was just pumped to see the results. Our job is to get the ball to the offense and let them do their thing."
