Syracuse assistant coach Gerry McNamara was promoted to associate head coach, the University announced on Wednesday.

“I appreciate the chance to continue to coach at Syracuse University and help Coach Autry build on the program's history of success,” said McNamara in a release. “The community has meant the world to my family and I over the years. I know as a staff we are eager to hit the ground running and get right to work.”

The move comes a week after the Orange announced Red Autry would succeed Jim Boeheim as head coach after Boeheim's 47-year run at the helm of the Orange.

McNamara has been an assistant coach since the 2011-12 season and has developed NBA guards Buddy Boeheim (Detroit), Michael Carter-Williams (Orlando), Tyler Ennis (LA Lakers), Elijah Hughes (Portland), Cole Swider (LA Lakers) and Dion Waiters (LA Lakers).

“Our program is fortunate to be able to have a quality coach like Gerry McNamara,” said Autry. “He has symbolized the uniqueness of our program as a player and as an assistant coach. I am grateful to have him remain on our staff.”

McNamara first arrived at Syracuse in 2002, and in his freshman season, played a vital role in SU's 2003 NCAA Championship.

McNamara's teams made the NCAA Tournament every year during his Syracuse career, and he was named to the All-Big East First Team in 2005 and was also the 2006 Big East Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

He left Syracuse as the school's record holder in 3-pointers made during a season (107), 3-pointers made during his career career (400), career free-throw percentage (.888) and minutes played (4,799).

“I am pleased Gerry will remain on our staff,” said Syracuse Director of Athletics John Wildhack. “He’searned this well-deserved promotion to Associate Head Coach. Gerry is an excellent recruiter and has done tremendous work developing our guards. I’m thrilled he will continue to grow his career at Syracuse.”
