Syracuse basketball adds Brenden Straughn as assistant coach

Syracuse announced on Thursday morning it is hiring George Washington assistant coach Brenden Straughn in a release.

Straughn fills the opening left by Jim Boeheim, who announced his retirement after 47 years as head coach. Adrian Autry was promoted to head coach and Gerry McNamara was promoted to associate head coach.

“Brenden is one of the bright young minds in college basketball,” Autry said in a release. “He is going to be a great fit on our staff and a great addition to the Syracuse family. He has a proven record of developing quality relationships with the student-athletes he has mentored.”

“I'm very blessed and excited to join the Syracuse University basketball family and community,” Straughn said. “I cannot wait to join Coach Autry, as we develop young men both on and off the court to reach their dreams and goals. The standard and storied tradition of the Syracuse basketball program will continue to attract the best and brightest young men from across the country. I ready to get to work."

In the 2022-23 season, Straughn was an assistant at George Washington. The Colonials led the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 76.3 ppg and finished the season 16-16, (10-8 A10). It was their best season since 2016-17.

Straughn has a strong recruiting footprint in the talent-rich DMV area, having coached Team Takeover. There, Straughn is credited with helping to develop five players who earned McDonald All-America honors and 70 Division I performers.
