Former Syracuse and NFL linebacker Rich Scanlon is the archetype of an Orangemen recruit from the late 90s. The physical, bruising linebacker played at Bergen (NJ) Catholic, and during that time, SU was the place to be for Garden State recruits under then-head coach Paul Pasqualoni.

The Orange got away with that in subsequent coaching staffs, but new head coach Fran Brown is a throwback to that era, and has placed an emphasis on winning New Jersey recruits again. We discussed this with Scanlon on today's The Juice on the Cuse Podcast, presented by Rivals and Bleav.

"Kids want to stay close to home so their family and friends can come watch them," Scanlon said of New Jersey recruits. "They want to play in a premier conference. Syracuse has good facilities. It’s a fun place to be. It’s a good education. There’s not a lot of reasons to not like Syracuse if you have people who can recruit."

Scanlon has been thrilled with the coaching staff so far, and plans on taking Brown up on his offer for SU alumni to come to practice in the spring.

"I’m loving it," Scanlon said of the new coaching staff. "Having gotten a chance to meet Fran in person, I’m excited about the staff he’s building. I’ll be at practice. I’m trying to drag as many guys as I can up there."

We also welcome on TJO editor-in-chief Brad Bierman to discuss the Marcellus Barnes Jr. commitment, Syracuse basketball's NCAA Tournament chances as well as Adrian Autry's first year as head coach.
