Rapid Reaction: Syracuse has depth to overcome loss of Chance Westry

Syracuse guard Chance Westry is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury, the school announced on Saturday. Westry's injury will require a medical procedure.

Westry, a redshirt freshman, transferred to Syracuse in April from Auburn. He redshirted his freshman year after a knee procedure, and finished the season averaging 2.5 points through 11 games.

RAPID REACTION

Chance Westry’s injury is a downer, for certain.

Last season at Auburn, Westry re-aggravated a prior injury to his right knee in early October and had arthroscopic surgery.

While the original timeline suggested he would be on the shelf for under a month, it actually took six weeks for his return before he eventually shut things down after conference play started and took a medical redshirt.

Hopefully, this injury does not lead to a chronic condition for Westry and he is able to make a full return to health.

For this year’s Orange, however, it may not be much of a loss.

A healthy Westry fits in as a backup guard and possible small forward, but playing those positions probably does not leave a whole lot of opportunity for playing time.

Judah Mintz and J.J. Starling will likely eat up at least 30 minutes per game apiece in the starting backcourt while Chris Bell and Justin Taylor already split the majority of the minutes at small forward last season.

Both were also being mentioned as potential fits for limited playing time at the two this year.

Quadir Copeland played both guard and forward last season and transfer Kyle Cuffe Jr. is also in the mix, making a very crowded backcourt and wing rotation.

The loss of Westry likely opens a little more opportunity for the more experienced Copeland and Taylor to see game time.
