Syracuse announced it had hired its 31st coach in school history on Tuesday in Georgia's defensive backs coach, Fran Brown. Brown is widely regarded as one of the best recruiters in college football, though he's also never held a head coaching position in college, or even a coordinator spot.
With all of that in mind, I spoke with ESPN's Andrea Adelson on this week's The Juice on the Cuse Podcast, presented by Rivals.com. Adelson gives her thoughts on the Brown hire, looks back on Dino Babers' tenure as SU's head coach, and discusses whether SU's 6-6 season was a success. Overall, she thinks the move to name Brown the head coach is a high-risk, high-reward proposition.
"It all starts with recruiting and recruiting in the northeast. And I think he puts 10 check marks into one box. If you want to be able to win at Syracuse, you have to have a lock on the northeast corridor. And the fact that he's the No. 1 ranked recruiter in the entire country right now is a huge positive. Now, there's going to be a huge learning curve. He's never been a coordinator, never been a head coach before."
Afterward, TJO editor in chief Brad Bierman calls in to assess what the Orange is getting in Brown, and whether he has the potential to bring Syracuse back to the top-tier program it was in the late 90s.
