It was announced shortly before game time that Garrett Shrader was injured and would miss the game, turning the Syracuse reins over to Carlos Del Rio-Wilson. That, combined with Boston College’s run-first offense, resulted in a conservative game plan that would not have looked out of place in the first matchup between these two teams in 1924, when the Orange won, 10-0.
As they did nearly a century ago, the Orange (4-5, 0-5 ACC) posted ten points, slugging it out with the Eagles (5-3, 2-2 ACC) all night, but gave up the deciding touchdown with 2:23 remaining in a 17-10 loss. BC quarterback Anthony Castellanos scampered in from seven yards out for the difference-making score to cap a night where he had 87 rushing yards and 165 more through the air.
SU’s fifth straight loss was characterized by an offense that was rarely effective outside of LeQuint Allen. Allen made a major impression on the game, cracking the century mark for the fourth time on the season by racking up 142 yards on 18 attempts. The sophomore authored a pair of big runs, a 32-yarder that helped set up the lone touchdown of the night and a 56-yard burst to set up the Orange’s field goal.
That lone touchdown for SU was a 27-yard quarterback draw by Carlos Del Rio-Wilson late in the opening quarter. It more than offset an early Boston College field goal and boosted Syracuse to a 7-3 lead.
That margin lasted almost a full quarter until a 19-play Eagle drive found the end zone for a 10-7 halftime lead. The Orange had a shot at knotting the score, but Brady Denaburg’s 57-yard field goal attempt was just outside the right upright.
Allen’s biggest burst of the night came very late in the third, but it placed SU in field goal range. Denaburg took advantage this time, knocking a 36-yarder through to knot the score. The Syracuse defense, which turned in a very good performance, stopped the Eagles twice, but not a third time, giving up the late touchdown.
Del Rio-Wilson effectively ended the game on the next play, throwing his fourth interception of the contest. BC ran out the clock from there.
