Former Mississippi State and Florida head football coach Dan Mullen will not be the next head coach at Syracuse, he tweeted on late Sunday evening.

Mullen had been linked with the SU vacancy, which is in its second week now following the dismissal of Dino Babers.

Several reports had said Mullen had met with athletics director John Wildhack about the position, but it appears to have failed to materialize.

“Love the (Cuse),” Mullen tweeted. “But will not be the next head coach.”

Mullen originally tweeted a defense of Ohio State coach Ryan Day’s struggles against rival Michigan. An SU fan responded to him with a Syracuse gif, which prompted his response.

Mullen led Mississippi State to a 69-46 record from 2009-17, and the Bulldogs were at one point the No. 1 team in the College Football Playoff Rankings in 2014.

He jumped to Florida following the 2018 season, and had similar success with the Gators, going 34-15 and winning the SEC East in 2020. But Florida struggled in 2021, falling to a 5-6 record before Mullen was dismissed as head coach.

He has been out of coaching since then, and has appeared as an ESPN College Football Analyst the past two seasons.

Mullen is familiar with Syracuse, having served as a graduate assistant with the Orange in 1998 under then-head coach Paul Pasqualoni.
